Why is 28 inches the most popular traffic cone height?

A 28 inch cone is tall enough for drivers to spot from a distance, and it is the minimum height the MUTCD calls for on freeways, higher speed roads and any work after dark. It is still light enough to carry and stack, which makes it the all purpose choice for work zones, parking lots, events and facilities.

What base weight should I choose?

28 inch cones come on bases from 5.5 lb up to 10 lb, with 7 lb as the everyday standard. Lighter bases are easier to carry for calm, low speed areas, and the 10 lb base holds best in wind and near faster traffic. Many have a cleated base that grips the road and keeps stacked cones from sticking together.

Do I need reflective collars?

For night work, yes. On cones 28 to 36 inches tall used at night, the MUTCD calls for a 6 inch white band 3 to 4 inches below the top and a 4 inch white band about 2 inches below it. That is why 28 inch cones come plain, with a 6 inch collar, or with both a 6 inch and a 4 inch 3M collar. For daytime only use, a plain cone does the job.

What colors and bulk options are there?

Beyond orange, 28 inch cones come in lime green, yellow, red, sky blue, navy blue, turquoise, kelly green, white, black, pink, purple and clear. For large orders, packs, single pallets, and two and four pallet bundles bring the price per cone down, and custom color runs are available in large quantities.

What cones and cone accessories are available?

Cones in every size from 2 inch training cones to 36 inch highway cones, in standard orange and many other colors, plus the gear that goes with them: reflective collars, cone bars, chain and connectors, lights, weights, signs, carts and truck mount holders.

Why are traffic cones orange?

Fluorescent orange is the color drivers read as a warning, and it stands out against pavement, greenery and sky in daylight. The MUTCD calls for orange as the main color of cones used on public roads, which is why orange is the standard, while other colors are used for private property, events and sports.
