Why are traffic cones orange?

Bright orange (often called "safety orange," PMS 165) is the color the human eye picks up fastest against pavement and daylight. It cuts through fog, rain, and dusk better than almost any other color. That's why the Federal Highway Administration set orange as the standard traffic cone color in the U.S., and why every state DOT specs it the same way.

How tall is a 28" traffic cone in real-world terms?

28 inches works out to about 2 feet 4 inches, or roughly kitchen-counter height. On a full-grown adult, it comes up to somewhere around the hip. It's the classic highway cone you see on interstates and DOT trucks all over the country.

Why do our traffic cones have a cleated bottom?

Flip a TCFL cone over and the base isn't smooth. It's molded with cleats, small ridges that do two jobs. First, they grip the road so the cone stays put when a semi passes or a wind gust hits. Second, they keep cones from suction-sticking together in the stack. Anyone who has pried apart a fused tower of cheap cones will appreciate that on day one.

Why do our traffic cones have dots on the bottom?

Those dots are ejector pin marks left by the injection molds we use to make each cone. Precise, consistent dots mean the mold was built to tight tolerances and the cone came out to spec. Cheaper import cones often have off-center or messy marks, and that usually tracks with lower-quality PVC and thinner walls. Flip a cone over and check the dots. It's a quality tell hiding in plain sight.

Why does a 28" traffic cone weigh so much?

Weight is what keeps a cone planted. Our 28" cones come in 7 lb and 10 lb versions. The 7 pounder is fine for indoor work, training courses, and calm outdoor conditions. The 10 pounder is built for real highway work: it stays put when a semi passes at 65 mph, when the wind picks up, and when foot traffic brushes past all day. In a live work zone, heavier almost always wins.
