The Back to School Drop Off Zone Playbook: Safe Lanes, Crossings, and Flaggers Before the First Bell

Back to school season is ramping now, and for a campus the calendar has one date that outranks the rest. Not the first pep rally and not picture day. The first morning of drop off.

In a compressed thirty minute window, hundreds of vehicles converge on a lane that sat empty all summer. Parents are relearning the pattern, new drivers are in the mix, and children are on foot in the same space as moving cars. Nothing else a school runs all year puts that many people, that many vehicles, and that little margin in the same place at the same time.

The good news is that a safe drop off is a setup problem, and setup is something you can plan in July. Here is how to lane the flow, staff the crossings, and mark the zone so it moves cars and protects kids on day one.

The First Week Is the Highest Risk Traffic Event a Campus Runs

Volume is only half of it. The other half is that the pattern is brand new. Drivers have not done this route since spring, the car rider line has new families in it, and everyone is in a hurry.
